Planned Parenthood files petition against DA

A Planned Parenthood clinic in Overland Park has filed a petition with the Kansas Supreme Court against Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline.
The petition for a writ of mandamus has been sealed by the high court so no information about it is available.
A petition of that nature seeks to compel a person to do something, said Peter Brownlie, Planned Parenthood’s chief executive officer.
Kline investigated the clinic while serving as state attorney general.
Paul Morrison, who took over that job in January, cleared the clinic last week of wrongdoing after co nducti ng his own inquiry.
Morrison advised a Planned Parenthood attorney of his findings in a letter that was released at a Planned Parenthood press conference on June 26.
Morrison’s letter also informed the attorney that Kline still had copies of abortion records from the clinic.
At that time, Brownlie said the clinic’s attorneys were trying every legal means available to force Kline to return the records in his possession.
Brownlie declined to be specific about what legal steps had been taken.
On Thursday, Brownlie confirmed that the petition was filed June 6 by Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri. But he said he could not talk about it.
Kline could not be reached for comment.
Along with the petition, Planned Parenthood asked if the case should proceed under seal. The court ordered it sealed the next day.
The court file states that a response from Kline is due by July 12.
