Tiller Charged with 19 Misdemeanors; Kline proven right all along -- Morrison ignores Kansas Late Term Abortion Law Restriction
WIBW.COM - JUNE 28, 2007
Attorney General Paul Morrison says he is filing 19 misdemeanor charges against Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller. Morrison says he is dropping the 30 charges filed by his predecessor Phill Kline and filing new charges against Tiller for alleged technical violations of a 1998 law restricting late-term abortions.
Morrison's charges follow a six-month investigation into allegations that Tiller performed illegal late-term abortions. Today Morrison said Tiller did not rely on a financially and legally independent doctor in obtaining a second opinion, which is required under Kansas law for some late-term abortions.
Soon after Morrison's announcement, Kansas Speaker of the House Melvin Neufeld said that he is pleased by the Attorney General's decision and that state law was being enforced.
Neufeld says the legislature will be examining the issues surrounding late-term abortions and if there any ways to reduce or prevent them.
